My Henry has three cavities.

Before we came to New Orleans we tried to have them filled. I'll keep a long and painful (for me) story short and tell you that the dentist was unable to fix them at that time. Henry started feeling pain in his tooth a couple of weeks ago. I started to freak out and then I calmed down. I found an amazing pediatric dentist here in Nola that has been so attentive to the situation, patient with me and all of my questions, and had his staff work hard to get Henry an appointment this friday. Henry has a great fear of the dentist and only under general anesthesia will the work get done.

I had no idea how common it was until both of my kids as well as some of their friends were at the same time having serious issues with cavities, as well as serious issues with fear of the dentist. This was maybe a year and a half ago. My kids drink a soda pop every blue moon, they don't eat tons of sweets, their teeth get brushed twice a day, we use fluoride, I spray xylitol in their mouths after they brush and throughout the day. The dentists attribute the problem to a vicious bacteria that is very hard to get rid of. Not very encouraging.

So here we are in a situation I hoped we'd never be in again, feeling like a horrible mom and preparing my kid to be drugged and unconscious, then off into another room...without me. I know this is more traumatic for me. Henry will be absolutely fine. It will all be taken care of at the Children's Hospital here in New Orleans. I have talked with two parents (including the dentist) that recently had their children there and for different reasons under general anesthesia. They only had good things to say.

I haven't wanted to share any of this. It's not fun to write or even think about. I also don't want to be judged by parents of shiny, happy, cavity free kids. It may be too late for that, actually.
The fact is, it's all I have been thinking about. Friday can't come soon enough.

For Henry's sake I'm showing a brave face and preparing him the best I can for a morning when he'd rather be running at the park than in a hospital.
I'm sure we'll see children there for reasons much worse than cavities. This just might set me over the edge, but I vow to keep all my tears at bay for Henry's sake.

There are many attractions to see on the roadside. I combined two things I love to see, nature and interesting furniture that people have discarded. Not old mattresses or rain drenched sofas, but the good stuff. I am not ashamed to admit I have collected some great roadside items. I've polished, painted, and made new someone else's trash.

My third precious parcel came from the Art Farm, handmade by the incredibly talented, Stephanie.

I was the fortunate winner during a special giveaway on her blog. It's rare that I win anything so you can imagine how thrilled I was when my name was drawn. The packaging alone deserves a place on my shelf.

This necklace will always be treasured! The crocheted chain and the tiny floral print took my breath away. It's delicate and light, it's the perfect length, and so obviously made with love.

I regret that I left this necklace in Los Angeles. I don't often bring jewelry with me when we travel because I tend to lose it. These photos don't really do it justice. What you can't see too well is the detail of the flower as well as the crystal button that she chose to close the necklace, such a thoughtful touch.

I adore this necklace and I thank you, Stephanie, for this, for your inspiring blog, and for all of the beauty and color you bring to your readers and well as all of the lucky children in your life.

At home in Los Angeles we are blessed with the best neighbors, Mike and Dee. They are kind, caring, and always have time for the kids, often bestowing upon them small treasures.

We are most likely to find Mike in the garden, his garden as well as ours. He keeps our trees and plants happy. We can also find him in his workshop creating magnificent bundles out of bamboo, hose, pipe, cords, and other interesting salvaged materials. It was Mike that inspired the theme last week. He also has inspired in Greta the making of countless bundles around our house. When she grows up she says she wants to be an artist like Mike.

Mike has installed his bundles around LA and I feel honored to have one of our own back home.

I fell in love with a painting that sweet Renilde shared with us on VACATION. I had to have a copy so I wrote to her and asked if I could buy a print. She happily said yes. A few weeks later it arrived.

Renilde not only generously sent me the original;

but she sent along two prints of the FAMILY for the kids! Oh how we adore this family!

They are now hanging on our walls and they keep us smiling.

During the past few weeks we have received exciting mail from all over the world. The kids voraciously tore open the first package before I even realized it's sender. When the dust settled and I could see the contents scattered across the table by curious little hands, it was clear that it came all the way from Australia! From a woman with a giant heart and an equally giant sense of humor; most of you know for whom I speak of; the ever wonderful and generous, Carmel.

We held bits of Australia in our hands and learned some interesting facts about kangaroos, and so much more.

We were lucky to get an apartment in the same building we were in last time! The kids are so excited to see the neighbor children again, as well as the horses, the street cars, the museums! As challenging as it is packing up again, returning to a familiar place makes all of the difference in the world.

Greta lost her first tooth on Monday morning. She's wise to the whole tooth fairy business, but the idea of a small treasure left under her pillow while she sleeps is very agreeable to her.

I stayed up late without a thought in my head of what to give her. I came up with a crocheted bag of irresistibles.

Some of Greta's favorite things; tiny dolls, chocolate money, lozenges, and a pretty button.

Since it was Ollie that finally knocked that tooth out while they cuddled, I thought he should write the note. Actually, he dictated and I wrote.

While Greta has been well for a few days, Henry and I had a relapse and are just getting over another wicked cold. I have been checking in on everyones blogs and am sorry for my quietness in the comments department. I'm still here, just gaining strength. I appreciate every single kind comment and email that has comes my way. I really do.

Zach was here for a few days over the holiday week. It was so great having him home and then so sad saying goodbye again for 3 more weeks. Then my friends, we will be heading out of Los Angeles again. I'l let our destination be a surprise. I'll just say that we are all pretty happy about it.

This past week was a doozy. The kids and I were sick, but my poor Henry had it the worst. There aren't many things worse than when your kids are not feeling well. My mind always goes to the children who are dealing with ailments and discomforts much worse than the common cold or the flu. I also think of their parents. I lay in bed at night and in the quiet and darkness next to my sleeping babies and I think about these things. Then I snuggle in close, smell their hair, kiss them. I'm so grateful for my beautiful children. I love spending my days with them. We have a good time together and I get to hug them whenever I want.

We were housebound for many days last week. Henry would ask, "Can we walk around the neighborhood?" We bundled up, Greta and I walked as Henry was pushed in the stroller. Autumn and winter in Los Angeles are my favorite times. Especially here in Mount Washington, it is especially beautiful and green.

It's been good these past couple of days to get out again, even if getting out always means getting in the car. We miss our biking days.

Zach is on a plane right now coming home. He'll be here for a few days then back to Boston for 3 more weeks. The kids won't see him until the morning. They have a plan to steamroll him as soon as they wake up.

Now I will drink my tea, crochet, and watch a movie, and wait.

Hurry home, my love!!

Just before arriving home in Los Angeles, we flew into San Francisco from Boston to attend a wedding ( more on that later). Here are a few photos taken with my iphone and using the Cross Process app. We stopped only for a quick lunch and a shoe store before leaving the city for Sausalito, just across the Golden Gate Bridge.

Thank you for the notes wishing the kids well. Greta seems to be getting better but Henry had a rough night. It will pass, hopefully sooner than later.

Both of my kids are sick. Last night they both took turns waking up, both hot with fever. Today the fever has past, but both still under the weather. We had to cancel our baseball game with friends at the park this morning, so we set up our own mini baseball diamond on our deck. The chairs, tepee, scooters, and bikes all got pushed out of the way. Some serious play ensued. In the meantime my sweet mother was slaving away painting our bathroom ( thank you, mom!).

As a kid I loved Star Wars. It inspired fantasies of flying through outer space. I remember shooting through the galaxy while swinging as high as I possibly could.

Driving at night, I'd lie down in the back seat of the car and the lights streaming past became speeding starfighters, tunnels were space portals.

The ceiling at the Boston Opera House suspiciously resembled a UFO.

It has been a full week of reunions, piles of laundry, grocery shopping, missing my husband back in Marblehead, and my head often in outer space. I regret that I didn't make the time to draw; I appreciate those that took this theme and flew with it.

alice's adventures in marblehead

One summer day, Alice unexpectedly found herself in a town with a curious name; Marblehead.

"Hmm. I have never seen a head on a marble, or a marble on one's head for that matter. I shall have a look around, for I have come such a long way, and oh what a terrible journey it was!"

Alice explored the seaside, but not alone. She met a tiny panda while eating cinnamon chocolate cake at the local bakery. He joined her in the carriage behind her bike. They rode everywhere together. He would sing songs to encourage her weary legs. In Alice's mind, this constituted a very good friend indeed!

Together they discovered colorful gemstones that dotted the shores of the protected and rocky coves. Collecting became their passion. They planned their days around the ebb and flow of the tide.

"What an earthly way to follow time, my dear Panda. I will propose the world chuck their pocket watches and simply look to the sea! Oh dear, that may present a problem if one does not live near the sea. This proposal may want for further consideration. Let's keep our mind's open, dear Panda."

After many days of exploration and thoughtful conversations, the air around them changed. They became chilled easily, and the leaves from the trees would rain down on them as they would cycle through the nearly abandoned town.

"I sense the new season, my friend. It may be that we wake from this dream and put our bicycle and carriage away. I was told by the kindly gentleman that runs the apothecary that there is a place we have not yet discovered! Do we have time for just one more expedition? He said that the beach is rich in gemstones and that we are likely to find the elusive scarlet! Oh, wouldn't that be a perfect end to our adventure?"

Panda agreed with great excitement; for a brilliant scarlet would be more than welcome to his already brimming collection.

They woke early on a particularly clear, crisp day and set out. Alice pedaled farther and harder than she ever had before. Breathless she cried, "Keep singing, dear Panda, keep singing!"

Panda sang louder, "…Ray, a drop of golden suuuuuuuun!"

After an arduous journey, their destination was finally upon them. Before them stretched a vast rocky beach in a quiet bay. The water was calm and a shade of blue bluer than the bluest of blues. It took their breath away. They stood for a moment soaking in the scene, then took off with a start in search of their scarlet.

The morning was spent searching, sifting, sitting, and talking. With an abundance of green, brown, cobalt, and white in their pockets, they were happy despite not finding what they hoped for.

Not wanting their search to be over, they gave in to their hungry growling bellies and decided to leave.

They stood silent and looked out at the sea. Alice waved half hoping she would get a wave in return, but the sea was simply too calm on that day.

Alice noticed a tear rolling down the cheek of her new friend.

"Dear Panda, why are you crying!"

"I am sad because this dream is ending and sad that I couldn't find you a piece of scarlet."

She knelt down, kissed Panda on the top of his head and wiped the tear from his cheek with her apron.

"Dreams can reoccur, my sentimental friend. Imagine that!"

Panda smiled.

"Where should we go now, dear Panda? Someplace warm? Someplace new? Home?"

Panda climbed into the carriage and pulled his wooly quilt over his lap. Alice hopped onto her tired but loyal bicycle. They rode off together with their minds and hearts open to whatever new adventure lie ahead, and Panda sang for Alice the whole way.

A friend that Zach is working with right now invited us along to Vermont for the weekend to visit family. The drive was unbelievably beautiful; the family showed us the greatest hospitality. There were lovingly prepared meals, many, many games of hide and seek, lots of kids and dogs running around, walks through the woods, and fresh apples right from the tree.

The Scott family cabin. I believe I overheard it said that it was originally built sometime in the 17th century. Since then there has been a fire, refurbishing, and additions made. It was a very cozy place to spend the weekend.

This is Greta's friend, Molly.

We missed the autumn foliage peak by a few days, but the leaves that fell created a golden carpet in the forest.

We stopped in Brattleboro for lunch on the drive home.

And a few miles further, a farmer's stand.

I saw an optometrist here in Marblehead. Turns out I'm farsighted (and getting old).

I ordered these specs from Warby Parker. With each pair you buy, a pair is donated.

Online you can choose five frames, they send you the frames in the mail, you get five days to choose a favorite, then send the glasses back with your prescription, a few days later you have new glasses. Pretty cool if you ask me.

It's late coming, but here is a tour of our Marblehead house. Making this little video was an excuse to use my new upgraded iphone. I used the 8mm app to make the movie.
The house was built in 1735. There is another house attached and also an apartment upstairs on the third floor. At one time this building was a brothel and a tavern. I imagine that pirates likely spent time here misbehaving and drinking their grog.

I'm not the best film maker, so be warned. There are a few of you that have been wanting to see the house, so this ones for you. Without further ado...don't say I didn't warn you...

Every week at the farmer's market the Marblehead Conservancy has a booth. There I grabbed a free map of Marblehead's "secret passageways". Last Saturday we followed our map to the Neck, the bit of land that we see across the harbor from us. Originally inhabited by the very poor, Marblehead Neck is now dotted with mansions.

We made our way to Castle Rock. From the road there was a small trail leading to this:

Before I knew it Zach and Greta were at the top of Castle Rock.

Henry was content to watch the crashing waves from below with his mom.

Next we visited the not so "secret" lighthouse.

They say this is the perfect spot to watch the yacht races.

The tall clock tower near the center of the photo is Abbot Hall. Our house is a minute walk from there.

As we returned home we noticed a sign on Abbot Hall's lawn announcing a "Symphony by the Sea" that night. It started around the time Henry gets ready for bed but I decided we'd go out anyway. Zach fell asleep early so the kids and I spiffed up a little and walked to the concert. We arrived early to watch the musicians warm up their instruments. It was very exciting. The kids were fascinated with some of the instruments and when the conductor came on stage they were completely captivated, as was I.

Henry and Greta sat quietly and listened to Hayden's Symphony #22. Henry was getting very sleepy so
we left at a break before two soloists took the stage. We watched for a few minutes from behind the door.

It was a beautiful end to a beautiful day.

Development.

My thoughts this week went to the development of a human being, the miraculous development that takes place within the first year of a child's life. The development of love and friendships. I thought of development as part of the creative process.

Today I thought of housing developments, then destruction of wet lands, cutting mountains in half making room for such developments, building on river beds, displacing endangered wildlife, the tragic misuse and mismanagement of our precious earth.

So I sat down with a brand spanking new ultra fine tipped pen in hand and beautiful smooth new paper.

At low tide we headed out into the dense fog to explore the sleepy coves with Grandma Peg. We beach combed, popped in for lunch at the Barnacle restaurant, and rode our bikes home in the rain.

My sea glass collection is getting a little out of control. Would any of you like a little bag of sea glass from Marblehead? I'd be happy to send some to you, because I'm finding piles of it everywhere, bits end up in the dryer, and every coat pocket has a piece or two. I can't. stop. collecting!

We were all so happy to have Grandma Peg here for a visit. The visit was too short, but we did squeeze in some beach combing, bike rides in the rain, a lobster roll ( for her), and apple picking in Peabody.

My daughter loves to hear this breakfast story.

Many moons ago when I was young, single, and poor, I would drive 30 minutes everyday to the flower shop where I worked. I wasn't a morning person, rarely made myself breakfast at home, and was usually running late for work. For about a year I had the daily routine of stopping by a quaint Korean owned donut shop just as I left the town I lived in (Ojai, California). I would pop in, pour myself a cup of Kona coffee, and order a double chocolate donut with nuts, sometimes two. Heaven, I tell you.

These days I'm trying to set a better example.

With an array of veggies and frozen fruits, whey protein, a bit of yogurt thrown in our new super duper powerful blender...

Oh Nadine.

A few days ago we received a package from wonderful, witty, and wise, Nadine.

All handmade lovelies that warmed my heart and made me feel so grateful for getting to know sweet Nadine.

I am constantly inspired by the art and music that she has to share. She visited London this past summer and I could pore over the pictures again and again. I love what she sees.

Thank you, dear friend, for the beautiful gifts. Henry chose the starfish and Greta chose the heart (in her favorite color). I did have to move the delicate garland to higher ground, out of the reach of some curious fingers.

We dream of living in a bike friendly city. When Zach and I visited Amsterdam on our honeymoon, we fell in love with the biking culture and talked about moving there. The idea seemed so romantic at the time, people were friendly and spoke better English than we did, the city so diverse and welcoming, and we rode our rented bikes or walked everywhere. Our dream has shifted to Portland, where we could easily get by with one car and get around mostly by bike. There is so much to see and experience on a bike that you miss in a car. It's so easy to stop and smell the roses, if you will. Yesterday while out on a ride we were caught in a rain storm. We didn't mind a bit. Added benefits are improved physical health, quality of life, and lightening our carbon footprint.

I have in my mind a large banner size drawing of Marblehead for the blog. Greta and I sat at the table last night, fulfilling our assignments for today. I came up with a rough sketch for my banner, and you'll have to see Greta's on her blog. She blows my drawings out of the water every time. Here's mine.

Thank you all for the kind and beautiful words for Greta yesterday. I still can't believe she's 7! A good number and a very good age.

Zach traveled to New York City last weekend and picked up the bike of his dreams. It was shipped from Holland and assembled in NYC at Adeline Adeline.

Seven years ago today, the ever smart, ever beautiful, ever funny, ever creative, ever caring and lovable, ever magnificent, Greta entered into our lives. We have been greatly blessed and happier since.

Ahoy!

I imagine what it would have been like to travel by ship. Months at sea in search of new land or familiar trading ports. What a different life. Minus the scurvy, rats, vicious storms, and pirates, I imagine it was at times a very romantic escapade. The salty air, the infinite waters, the sound of wind in the sails.

I have never been on a sail boat. Before we leave Marblehead I hope to do this. Being in the yachting capital of the world (or so they say), how could we not take advantage of this opportunity?

Gas House BeachThis small community beach is located on Little Harbor in one of the oldest sections of the Marblehead waterfront. It was here, in 1629, that the first settlers established the "plantacion" called "Marble Harbor." Gashouse Beach got its name from the gas generating plant that burned coal there in the late 1800's to create gas for the town's street and house lamps. Gashouse Beach is located on Gashouse Lane, off Orne Street.

The kiddos and I hit the road on the bike yesterday in hopes of discovering some place new. If I hadn't glanced down this narrow road I would have missed this beach.

drawing challenge 9/11

In this little town of Marblehead, every other home has an American flag flying. It's not something we see in Los Angeles. This is indeed a patriotic little town.
Yesterday, September 11th, while walking the dog an older gentlemen walked past with a cup of Starbucks coffee in each hand. I commented, "Ah, coffee, thats looks good right about now."
He replied with a serious face, "They are giving it out free this morning." He shook his head in disbelief and gratitude, "I can hardly believe it."
It made me think about the number of people in this community and on this coast that have been personally affected by what happened on 9/11. Friends and family members that were lost. Then my mind went to those who went to Iraq to fight, die, or be forever scarred by the indescribable brutality of war. My mind went to Afghanistan, Somalia, the Congo, Haiti, Sudan, the young women in Ethiopia, the list doesn't end. And to the individuals in this world that suffer in silence; whose plight doesn't make the nightly news.
I ran my hands through the small wet stones at the shore a few days ago. Greta and I searching for sparkling sea glass. With 9/11 on my mind, I saw every stone as an individual. A shining life lost in the name of war and often sadly, in the name of God.
Rather than painting lifeless stones, I decided to paint a field of beautiful flowers, representing the lives lost. Beautiful, precious lives. Countless.
Despite the darkness that pervades the world right now, I do have hope for these flowers. Hope that is not credulous. I believe that these flowers will see life again on this earth and that the meek shall inherit it.
If my painting seems a little too happy, this is why. I have hope.

My heart breaks for those that are suffering worldwide, and for the families and friends personally affected by those lost on 9/11. I wonder if the gentlemen with the coffee had lost someone that day. I think about him...

a week in the life

Last weekend we finally made a trip into Boston. First stop was the Children's Museum.

Back to the quiet of marblehead.

I can't get enough of the gardens and flowers in bloom.

Yesterday we visited the local library and were were happy to find an exhibit on the fishing and shoemaking industries that flourished when Marblehead was young. The exhibit was just small and interesting enough that the kid's really enjoyed it.

On our ride back along the Marblehead Rail Trail, where we happily go out of our way to avoid the narrow roads with no bike lanes, we found this little guy on the path.

greasy spoons and adventure belts

For our first morning ride with the kid's bike trailer we peddled over to Driftwood restaurant. A local greasy spoon that boasts yummy pancakes, just what my girl was craving. The pancakes weren't to her liking, but the potatoes and eggs were very good and the atmosphere couldn't feel more local. It was nice to walk in and see familiar faces and friendly smiles.

Leaving breakfast we rode past this building. It felt like an extension of the sea and sky. So beautiful.

We arrived home to a package from Los Angeles. In it were handmade Adventure Belts for the kids, made by the amazing Liza (Poppy's mom). Henry refused to model for me, Greta on the other hand is hardly without hers making it easy to capture the awesomeness of this gift.

We've also received in the mail books, photos, and sweet letters from friends back home. They mean more than anyone can imagine. We love to travel and are happy to take advantage of these once in a lifetime opportunities, but feelings of homesickness come up from time to time. So we thank our dear friends for their gifts and thoughtfulness.

I'd also like to ask for some recommendations for new music that we can add to our library. Something that might be fitting for our Marblehead soundtrack. Any suggestions? We like all types of music, as long as it's easy to listen to, not too depressing, feel good, folksy, hipster, funky, electronic,old, new... we also love music from all around the world. So, do share!

Here in the Marblehead House Library there are many books on decorating and specifically the Arts and Crafts Movement. I copied this pattern for beautiful stained glass, added my own twist here and there, and added color.

Irene blew through quite a bit to the west of us and spared the eastern part of the state. It was sort of surreal for me, the days leading up to it, the preparation and constant monitoring of the storm. I'm so thankful that it blew through during the day, that the kids thought it was exciting, and that it was not hurricane strength by the time it reached us. I'm also thankful for the friends on the west coast that shared their own hurricane stories and also gave me the numbers of their families on the east coast, just in case.

After the worst of the storm blew through, Zach took Greta out to the harbor to feel the wind and see how the town fared. There were many leaves and branches littering the streets and the Rock Park, that was it.

We have been back to beautiful sunny skies and warm weather, though I do feel a hint of fall in the afternoons. We finally got our bike a trailer for the kids. I ride them about town now ( they aren't fans of walking in the heat) and we're all happy.

People here take great pride in their gardens, usually small and beautifully maintained. I'll share more photos later.

To say this town is charming is an understatement. I can't wait for you to see more. I was having a little trouble uploading photos last night. Give me a day to figure it out.

Today is the day Irene blows through. We decided to stay put. The hurricane has moved west, our house is on a hill, and also very protected by houses on either side of us, one attached and the other 3 feet away. No tall trees or poles to worry about. Still, we are following all of the safety measures and being as prepared as we can be.

There's a great farmer's market in town. We missed it this weekend ( though it was still going on), but last week this was our spread!

Zach made this delicious roasted beet salad! A new favorite.

And the kid's favorite park thus far, Crocker Park, or Rock Park as the kids aptly named it.

This, my friends, is my husband's dream. To have this bike and ride like this with his wee ones.

We've had lovely days here in Marblehead our first week. We are keeping a close eye on Irene and might be heading out of town.

Internet is a bit spotty and I'm sure will be even worse next week so I may be away from this space for a while.

Greta hasn't had a chance to post lately, but she has been so thrilled with all of the comments she's getting on her blog. It really means a lot, to both of us. Thank you, all of you!

Let's hope that people heed the warnings and stay safe out there.

It had been several years since spending time in the Oregon woods, it felt like home. I didn't take many photos this trip. I just wanted to be. Be with my family, be with the trees, be with the river.

I still have some photos of Oregon and the wedding to share. For the moment we are still settling in, unpacking, organizing, and getting to know our 250 year old house. We are staying in Marblehead, just north of Boston. It's beyond charming. I can't wait to get out and explore. I'll let you know what I find!

We did find Crosby's Market where they have kid size carts and kid size jugs of milk.

For the record, I don't ask them to be silly for the camera, it's just what happens.

2. A change of the form or nature of a thing or person into a completely different one, by natural or supernatural means.

This weekend I changed the form and nature of some beautiful flowers. They arrived in their plastic sleeves, full of thorns and wrinkled leaves. I cleaned them, made them fit to drink clean water, they perked up. ( Silly helpers always make a job easier.)

I gathered some wild mint and other foliage from the forest.

Gathered and tied in individual bouquets, I tried to give them a "just picked from the garden" feel.

Flowers that arrive in their crude packaging are cleaned, thoughtfully brought together in little bundles, with some strong tape and ribbon, they mingle and mix, and become suitable for the prettiest of brides.

this is the life

After two very long days of driving we arrived in McKenzie Bridge, Oregon. This is one of the most beautiful spots I have been to and spent about a week here every summer growing up. It has changed a little, there's a coffee shop across the street now, but mostly it's the same. I'm seeing it all over again for the first time through my kid's eyes.

The wedding is this Saturday, Friday will be spent putting together flower bouquets for the bridal party. In the meantime, we enjoy the river, the trees, the clean air, and time with the grandparents.

Our last week at home was a bit of a blur. I ran crazy with errands and last minute packing and so many goodbyes.

We squeezed in the Detective Party that Greta had been asking for since New Orleans. Dress up was optional and of course I was so impressed by the costumes.

I also made a few things that helped give me some calm amidst all of the stress. A computer bag, the outside blue is a beautiful wool, the lining is cotton, I sandwiched a double layer of fleece in between, and button ties. I regret not taking a photo of the finished project. Now it's off in the mail.

We have a tiny little house with a loft where the kids and I sleep. We walk just a few yard to the river, at night we open the window and fall asleep to the roaring of it.

The very first day the caretaker's grandchildren were there, two girls, 6 and 4. They were a couple of characters, Greta got on with them really well. They spent the day running wild as if they had known each other for years.

At night Greta was dying to roast marshmallows despite not having much of a taste for them, it was really just an excuse to be by the fire. About five times this day Greta said, " This is the liiiiiife!"

The following day was spent with Grandpa, my dad, Seaweed Pete. There was a serious game of Chinese Checkers.

And lots of basketball.

We're looking forward to a few more days before the wedding. For now we feel so relaxed and at home in this beautiful spot. I would love to live in Oregon. I'm hoping that when we get back to Los Angeles, it will just be to get our things.

I've been a little out of the loop, I missed last week's Drawing Challenge, but look forward to being back for this weeks Metamorphosis!

Today we start our long drive and we say goodbye to Los Angeles for three whole months! Our adventure begins with nine days in Oregon. We are so excited to see family and attend my little brother's wedding. We will then fly out of Portland to Boston!

Yesterday there were some emotional goodbyes with a couple of Greta's friends. I think it made her realize just how much she is loved.

This week we fit in one last beach day. It was beautiful.

Hopefully I'll be back with photos of Oregon! It all depends on the internet connection out in the woods.

If you don't hear from me, I'll see you in Boston!

t-shirt quilt

For our friend Chris in New Orleans. ( See him in this post.)

He asked me to make him a quilt of t-shirts that he has been saving since grade school. It was my goal to have it done before we left for Boston, and I am so happy that I did! Chris was so sweet to the kids, they really loved him. They ask if he'll be in Papa's new office. Sadly, no.

We are leaving Saturday morning for our 9 days in Oregon. I'm not sure if I will be able to get on the internet out there. So if you don't hear from me for awhile, you'll know why.
