given to the little children of new orleans

One morning on the way to Greta's horseback riding lesson we walked through the park from an unfamiliar direction.  We noticed a man with his dog, throwing and fetching.  The kids were naturally drawn to this scene, so our steps took us to the pair.  As we stepped closer through the grassy field, the three of us saw what seemed like a mirage.  A storybook scene.  Sculptures green with patina, inviting steps into a large pool of water, the light splashing sound of the fountain, spanish moss dripping from the canopy of oaks overhead.  The young man was throwing the ball into the water, the dog bounding in to get the ball and cooling himself of in the process.
Despite not having the proper clothes for playing in the water and on our way to the horses, it was irresistible to all of us.
Since that day we have been regular visitors to the pool.  It was built in 1921 and I've also learned that there is an identical pool in City Park.  We've expected to meet other children there, but thus far we have only met friendly dogs and their owners.  One gentlemen said that it's a nicer place for his dog to cool off than the river, the river being too dirty and full of alligators.
I expect that in the summer time this magical spot will be teaming with splashing and laughing children.
This place is truly a gift to the children of New Orleans.  And it's visitors.

I have taken photos here with both my phone and my new camera. Cookie.

Behind the pool, on the other side of that fence is the Audubon Zoo.

One day the waders before us left pink camellia petals everywhere.

Back in the day.

We love that fountain and my kids have a great time splashing around in it. We've never seen anyone else playing in it. It's not a very high traffic area.

We've seen the one in city park but it's location isn't as inviting to stopping and splashing in the water.
