drawing challenge/ theatre

First off, I didn't draw.  I have a little to share anyhow.

When I was about 10 years old my brother, David, was 16.  It was around then that he started introducing me to some great music and breaking me away from the fluff I had been listening to (Sorry, Wham!).  The first band was Rush.  He was wild about Rush.  We would sit in his room and listen to his cassette tapes, he would clue me in to the thoughtful lyrics, the tricky guitar riffs, and the amazing drumming of Neal Peart.  We'd listen to the guitar and drum solos over and over again.  I adored my big brother and more that I loved the music, I loved seeing how excited he was over it and that enthusiasm was infectious.

I really wanted to draw this week, but alas, it wasn't meant to be.  I mulled the theme over in my mind, and this Rush song started playing in my head and I wished I still had that concert t-shirt that I wore so proudly when I was 12.  I also felt thankful to have such a cool big brother that took the time to share his music with me.

Limelight

Living on a lighted stage
Approaches the unreal
For those who think and feel
In touch with some reality
Beyond the gilded cage.

Cast in this unlikely role,
Ill-equipped to act,
With insufficient tact,
One must put up barriers
To keep oneself intact.
[ Lyrics from: http://www.lyricsfreak.com/r/rush/limelight_20119942.html ]
Living in the Limelight,
The universal dream
For those who wish to seem.
Those who wish to be
Must put aside the alienation,
Get on with the fascination,
The real relation,
The underlying theme.

Living in a fisheye lens,
Caught in the camera eye.
I have no heart to lie,
I can't pretend a stranger
Is a long-awaited friend.

All the world's indeed a stage,
And we are merely players,
Performers and portrayers,
Each another's audience

Outside the gilded cage.

Listen for the amazing guitar solo around 3:04.

oh, those past tricks... this reminds me of my own heavy metal days-gone-by... i find this pretty theatrical, rachel!
but i also do like your reverie on the days with your cool big brother... events to impress us, and shaping us.

They're a pretty cool band! I love their long hair! And that's some serious geetar playing.

I can just imagine you as a little girl with your older brother listening to his music.

Oh, such an older brother I've missed, dear Rachel.
and I didn't know 'Rush' and even the song, but I'm really impressed: they play real instruments... and very good: such a guitar solo! and really theatrical!

ahhh Rush - i am so glad you spelled out the lyrics because i clearly had some of them wrong! hard to translate that voice sometimes you know! but i get the passion, the epic rock drama behind it all. Boys, big stereo speakers...love it!
i replied to you on my post too so please, come back!
"underlying theme..." yeah

Love the pic of you in NO and here with your big bro! That's such a great memory with him... i remember being impressed by my big sisters too, but the music they shared was literally theatrical -- Broadway musicals! We used to play them over and over again. I still remember quite a few of the songs from The Unsinkable Molly Brown, South Pacific, My Fair Lady, Camelot and more... also Barbra Streisand!

never hear of them but i am checking-listening them out right now!
this story is so sweet and reminds me of how my oldest sister got me all hooked on swedish punk when i was about 10 years old. and then we went to see guns n roses in a concert around that same time. i felt so TINY in between all those bodies, we squeezed ourselves all the way to the front and i remember i was ecstatic!
